Pontiac Rally Wheel With Christo Umbrella

Grapevine, California

Late 1991

Here's another view of the Impala at the Umbrella Interpretive Site alongside I-5.  Note the junkyard Pontiac Rally wheel on the front; I had installed a disc-brake setup from a 1970 Impala, which required 15" rims to clear the rotors.  For anyone considering installing disc brakes on a 1965-96 full-size Chevy, it's a pretty easy swap.  You'll need to get everything from the ball-joints out from a 1970 or 1971 car (the later ones have a different steering setup) and, of course, the 1970-71 master cylinder and proportioning valve.  The new spindles raise the front end an extra 2" over the drum brake installation, but the car stops orders of magnitude better.  The 1970 Impala weighs a good 800 pounds more than the '65 model, so the brakes really grab on the lighter car.
